If you’ve used essential oils before, or are planning to in the future, you’re going to see the term “vita flex points” often. After reading this article you’ll understand what they are and how to use them.

 

 

What are vita flex points?

Vita flex is an ancient technique believed to have originated from Tibet. It was developed during a fifty year period of research and application by a man named Stanley Burroughs who brought it to the US.

Translated, vita flex means “vitality through the reflexes”. We have a complete network of reflex points that stimulate all of our internal body systems. Vita flex uses reflex points in order to release tensions, congestions, and maladjustments in the body. (Higley & Higley, 2013)

Most often this technique is done on the hands and feet and focuses on the reflex points that connect to the area of the body you’d like to support, as you'll see below.

Below you’ll see charts for vita flex points on feet and hands as these are the most often used. Each black dot represents the reflex point and which body system it connects to.

How to use vita flex without essential oils

If you're just starting to use vita flex, you may want to start out without essential oils to get the feel for the way your fingers curl and roll without the chance of slipping. Then, after a few tries, you can add essential oils as described in the next section.

To use vita flex without oils:

  • Step 1: Find the reflex point on the vita flex chart that you want to address. Start with the pads of your fingers over the reflex point and use a rolling motion to curl/roll the fingers from the pads all the way over to the topside of your nail(s). (It’s good to have short nails.)

  • Step 2: You should slowly increase pressure as you curl your fingers, but once you reach the topside of your nails, immediately release the pressure.

  • Step 3: The curling should be a continuous motion with medium to heavy pressure being placed on the reflex point. Never press a reflex point and hold, always curl with gradually increasing pressure.

  • Step 4: The curling motion may be done several times over the same spot. Repeat this rolling and releasing technique until the entire vita flex point or area is covered.

How to use essential oils with vita flex

Once you're comfortable with the roll/curl technique, you can add essential oils. Vita Flex Therapy is beneficial alone, but applying essential oils enhances the results.

To use oils with vita flex:

  • Step 1: Put one to three drops of oil in the palm of your hand. Take the pads of your fingers and rub the oil (usually in a clockwise motion) in your palm.

  • Step 2: Follow the same steps above by finding the reflex point on the vita flex chart that you want to address. Start with the pads of your fingers over the reflex point and use a rolling motion to curl/roll the fingers from the pads all the way over to the topside of your nail(s). (It’s good to have short nails.)

  • Step 3: You should slowly increase pressure as you curl your fingers, but once you reach the topside of your nails, immediately release the pressure.

  • Step 4: The curling should be a continuous motion with medium to heavy pressure being placed on the reflex point. Never press a reflex point and hold, always curl with gradually increasing pressure.

When to use vita flex and essential oils

You can use vita flex and essential oils anytime! Most reference material for essential oils will have the phrase, “apply to vita flex points” somewhere in their recommendations.

So let’s do some real life examples of common candida symptoms and the vita flex points that may be able to give some relief.

Using vita flex points and essential oils for digestion

Say I want to support my digestive system. First, I decide which oils to use, maybe peppermint, ginger, or Di-gize (from Young Living). Then, I place a drop or two in my left hand and take the pads of my fingers on my right hand and rub the oils - usually in a clockwise motion.

Finally, I apply it to the reflex point on the lower half of my foot, above the heel, as shown on the chart. I make sure I do the rolling and releasing motion all across my foot to make sure I get all those digestive organs. If I have some oil left in my hand, I’d just repeat it for the other foot.

And if I'm really feeling the need to be pampered, I might try talking my husband into a relaxing massage with delicious smelling foot massage oils and candles. ;)

Can you use vita flex points for insomnia?

Yes. The big toe contains points for the brain, pineal gland, and pituitary gland. You can blend a drop of lavender and a drop of Roman chamomile in your palm and then massage and roll/curl your thumb up and down the center of the big toe.

Refer to the vita flex foot chart above to locate the points. 

If you look at the vita flex hand chart, you’ll see there are also reflex points for brain, pineal gland, and pituitary gland on the pad of the thumb.

If you think your insomnia may be related to hormones, myrtle is a good essential oil to try as well.

 

What essential oil and vita flex points are used for adrenals?

If you’re suffering from adrenal fatigue, you can use a couple drops of nutmeg essential oil over the adrenal and kidney vita flex points towards the bottoms of the inner arches of your feet and/or the outer edges of the pad on the side of your hands beneath the thumb.



As mentioned above, use the rolling/curling technique with your fingers along the adrenal and kidney vita flex points found in the foot and hand charts above.
